Let us read from Psalms 11:3, “If the foundations are destroyed, What can the righteous do?” Let us read another verse in connection with this, Hebrews 12:26-29, “And His voice shook the earth then, but now He has promised, saying, “Yet once more I will shake not only the earth, but also the heaven.” This expression, “Yet once more,” denotes the removing of those things which can be shaken, as of created things, so that those things which cannot be shaken may remain. Therefore, since we receive a kingdom which cannot be shaken, let us show gratitude, by which we may offer to God an acceptable service with reverence and awe; for our God is a consuming fire.” The Bible says that the foundation of every created thing can be shaken. Only the Kingdom of God will remain. Since we have received this kingdom, we need to show gratitude. All things created can be shaken and all the thing on the earth will try to shake our Christian life, but we should live an unshakable Christian life.
In the floods that recently occurred in Kerala, there were houses that fell from the foundation itself. This is a reminder that everything on this earth can be shaken. God wants us to build our life on the unshakable foundation. In Hebrews 1:10-12 we read, “And, “You, Lord, in the beginning laid the foundation of the earth, And the heavens are the works of Your hands; They will perish, but You remain; And they all will become old like a garment, And like a mantle You will roll them up; Like a garment they will also be changed. But You are the same, And Your years will not come to an end.” Only the Lord can be relied on. We can’t put our trust in any material thing but only in our Lord. Jesus said, “Heaven and Earth will pass away but my words will never pass away.”
We need to be careful where we are building on. What is our foundation? There is a song that we sing, “On Christ the solid rock I stand! All other ground is sinking sand!” If our Christian life is built on Christ the solid rock, it can’t be shaken. This is God’s will for us – to have an unshakable Christian life. In 1 Corinthians 15 Paul encourages the Corinthians to be “steadfast and immovable”. If both our feet are placed are in the Kingdom of God, it will remain firm; no matter what happens in our lives.
Why does our Christian life shake and toss in certain situations? Because our relationship with Christ is not deep. Our Christian life should be anchored in God’s word, in His love, in faith and hope. Our anchor should be gripped onto the Lord. We know how huge massive boats are anchored in the sea. Their anchors go deep into the seabed and grip the seabed. When the grip is strong, the ship is safe from any storms. We also need to be gripped strongly in God’s love so that no external circumstances may move us.
In Luke 6 we read the parable of the houses built on the rock and on the sand. There are 2 types of foundations here – the rock and the sand. The first man – dug deep and built on the rock. Jesus compared him to a man who listens to God’s word and acts on it. He lives according to the words taught by Jesus. The Bible says the first man’s house can’t be shaken. The second man built on the sand and he is compared to a man who listens but doesn’t obey the words of Jesus. This man also dug, but he didn’t dig deep. He was satisfied with just coming to the church and listening to the messages but wasn’t serious about the Christian life. This man’s house collapsed in the times of trouble. God wants us to have an unshakable Christian life on the unshakable foundation.
In Hebrews 12 we read, “Our God is a consuming fire”. God reminds us that we are building our superstructure on the foundation. But God will test our superstructure with fire. Fire will test the quality of our life. In 1 Corinthians 3:12-15 we read, “Now if any man builds on the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw, each man’s work will become evident; for the day will show it because it is to be revealed with fire, and the fire itself will test the quality of each man’s work. If any man’s work which he has built on it remains, he will receive a reward. If any man’s work is burned up, he will suffer loss; but he himself will be saved, yet so as through fire.” May God help us to build a life that is steadfast even through the testing of fire. May God bless us.
